A very sweet and quick read, Her Amish Refuge carries the message that we all want to be heard and accepted, and the freedom that comes when you find the right person. I cozied up with this novel on a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon, and it matched my vibe perfectly.
My heart instantly went out to Gil when I read about how he’d been treated for how he looks and his illiteracy. It’s clear that despite his limitations, he has a sweet spirit and a heart of gold. Watching how Gil’s brother and sister-in-law treat Gil and the other members of the family is infuriating to read but really highlights just what a saint Gil really is and highlights the wonderful writing of Pamela Desmond Wright.
Florence joins the Kessler family after escaping an abusive relationship and quickly sees what a wonderful man Gil is and the life she could’ve had if she’d stayed in the Amish community. Florence and Gil share some truly touching moments and the acceptance that Gil must’ve felt, something that he’d craved for so long, had to have been the most soothing balm on a painful wound. They give one another what they’ve both been needing, and it’s beautiful to witness.
This character-driven novel is a quick read, but it’s packed with depth and flows perfectly. You find yourself rooting for these characters and craving a happily-ever-after, which comes in the best way possible. It doesn’t get much better than this!
