About the Book

Tatterhood

Title: Tatterhood
Series: Band of Unlikely Heroes #3
Author: Dawn Ford
Publisher: ScrivKids
Release Date: January 28, 2025
Genre: Middle-Grade Fantasy

Troll Princess Horra Fyd and young druid Rowan team up to reverse the evil Erlking’s spells and save the creatures across the Wilden Lands. However, Fairy Princess Glory Toppenbottom is still a thorn in Horra’s side. After Horra and Glory have a heated fight, Glory sneaks out of the castle. She is bent on finding the Erlking to reverse the hex he cast on her. This creates a political disaster when the Glory’s sister announces she’s coming to retrieve Glory.

Angered by Horra’s treatment of a royal guest, King Fyd proclaims Horra to be Queen Bearer. She becomes the ad hoc ruler, freeing her father from the scandal. Shocked, Horra assents. Her first move is to find the missing fairy princess before it becomes an interkingdom war. They form a search party and leave.

The Erlking stalks their every move. When the only choice points them toward the Riven, a cursed hidden land, they don’t hesitate. They find Glory is already there, but are immediately separated. The Riven is nothing like anyone imagined. Will they survive the Erlking’s magical traps, or will they, like everyone else, perish within its borders?

My Review

I love being back in the Wilden Lands!

Tatterhood pretty much picks up right where Mossycoat left off, where we find all the characters recuperating from the events of the previous novel.  The fairy princess, Glory, is quite unhappy, feeling like a prisoner in a castle not her own.  The attitude and emotions are high between her and the troll princess, Horra, who is trying to figure out the next step in the fight against the Erlking.  Her father, King Fyd, crowns her the Queen Bearer, and I enjoyed seeing Horra step up to fill the role, as these are some pretty big shoes to fill.  Rowan was still a favorite of mine, as I get Groot vibes from him,  and Princess Glory was just as annoying and frustrating to me as she was to Horra.  Her selfishness truly knows no bounds, but I also love a good redemption story and hope to see her character continue to grow along with the rest of the cast.

I have really enjoyed this series so far, but I do feel like this novel was more on the slow side.  There is some tension and a mystifying element that did keep things interesting for the most part, but I was craving more.  Thank goodness this story will continue, as I am ready to see the Erlking finally get what’s coming to them.

If you haven’t read anything from the Band of Unlikely Heroes series, I highly recommend reading the series in its entirety.  I am truly smitten with this world and all its inhabitants.  There is intrigue, mystery, and the journey to finding what you’re truly capable of as you stand in the face of adversity.  If you’re new to the fantasy genre, this is the perfect place to start.  So good!
