Certain they are well on their way to sisterhood, each girl is floored when Tillie’s lousy-excuse-for-a-father puts in an appearance after a six-year absence. Too bad “lousy dad repellant” doesn’t come in a can. Even though Tillie’s dad has sobered up and is determined to make amends, Tillie would rather he just disappear again. If he stays, “Operation: Secret Sisters” may need to be renamed “Operation: Not Gonna Happen.”
If that’s not bad enough, the biggest bully in seventh grade comes over often and wishes he could call the West’s farmhouse “home.” When the bully’s abusive dad shows up as well, Ginnie thinks it’s time to change her family’s motto from “When you’re here, you’re family” to “There’s no more room at the West’s.”
My Review 💙
I have enjoyed this series so much, but I would be lying if I said I enjoyed
Being West is Best as much as I have the other books in this series. I actually finished the book quite disappointed, and I hate having to admit that, considering how invested I am in the West family, but it being the last book in the series I had much higher expectations.
Simply West of Heaven (Book 3) ended with such an amazing swoon-worthy moment, and then a major cliffhanger that I knew would be addressed in this final installment.
Being West is the Best literally picks back up at the moment that book three ends and takes you through the next few days, and the falling out from that pivotal moment, but takes the reader in a different direction than you'd expect.
I am not one for spoilers, but I will tell you one thing that ruined the experience for me was Miss Amanda. I felt like her thoughts and feelings were very muddled, and not clearly defined, concerning the bombshell that has hit the family, which left a huge part of the story open-ended, and succeeded in driving me nuts, especially since this is the end of the series! I really hope the author will reconsider, and continue this series with one more book, so that loose ends can be tied up, and we can hopefully see a wedding!!
Like the other books in the
Ginnie West Adventure series, it is well written for middle grade readers, but does have some major drama and themes that are very adult in nature, like adults dealing with alcoholism, and physical and verbal abuse towards both an adult and a child, but these tough topics are handled in a very age appropriate way.
Despite this volume not being my favorite, I have really enjoyed this series more than I thought I would, and I am keeping my fingers crossed about a book five!!
