Book Review: Lady Serena's Choice by Jewel Allen

Series: Timeless Romance Single: Book 10
Publisher: Mirror Press
Release Date: October 27, 2020
Genre: Clean Regency Romance

Lady Serena would rather ride horses than dance in the ballroom. And no one matches her passion for horses and makes her feel more alive than her father’s groom, Sebastian Bromley. As the daughter of a duke, however, she knows she may never act on her feelings or risk a scandal.

Sebastian Bromley has a job that many in the working class would envy—as groom in the Duke of Delaval’s horse stables. But Sebastian aspires to go to America where he can create a name and wealth for himself using his horse acumen. Until then, he must hide his love for Lady Serena, the beautiful daughter of the house.

Even as Lady Serena and Sebastian fulfill their duties, a winter stranding pushes their mutual feelings to the surface. When their hearts yearn for what society forbids, choosing love means risking it all.

My Review 💜

If I have to wrap up Lady Serena's Choice in a few words I would say, "short and sweet," which could be taken in both a positive and a negative light.  This was definitely a "chill" read.  Though there is major conflict and angst going on throughout the whole book it is apprehension that is brought on by forbidden love, giving it a totally different feel.

The main characters, Serena and Sebastian, both have hearts of gold, and I instantly fell in love with Sebastian's family, and in turn loathed the majority of Serena's family.  The most enjoyable parts to read for me were the moments with Sebastian's family.  I was truly charmed by their simplicity and acceptance.

I believe there were many details that were left out, due to the length of the narrative, leaving me craving more richness.  I wish the moments between Sebastian and Serena could've dug deeper, maybe even providing short flashbacks, giving insight to how their relationship grew over the years.  Yes, they both felt the attraction and electricity between them when they were together, and they shared their love of racing and horses, but I didn't really feel that love between them.  All I really felt was their mutual admiration and respect for the other.

This is one of those books that I wanted so much to love!  Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind, or was looking too deep for more meaning than was there?  I never could quite put my finger on what exactly left me lackluster.

All in all, it's not a bad story!  Lady Serena's Choice has good characters, decent writing, a wonderful setting, and a soothing flow.  It's just, sadly, one of those books that fell a little flat for me.

My Rating: ★★★
