It’s been awhile since I’ve read a good enemies to lovers trope and what a way to bring me back into the genre! Jalissa and Rider have been enemies since high school, and when they are unexpectedly pushed together on a fundraising campaign, fighting for funding for two separate charities that are near and dear to each of their hearts, those old feelings pick up right where they left off. Cue the snide, underhanded comments and groans of frustration!
Jalissa started out so incredibly rigid, making me feel tense just reading her about meticulous perfectionist ways, and her quick judgemental thoughts really grated on my nerves, so it was a fight for me to care about this character, even knowing the true motivations behind her actions.
Rider, on the other hand, had my heart from the word go. I’ve always had a thing for firemen, and you pair that fact with his character having a good sense of humor, as well as a heart for children, and I found myself already swooning by the second chapter, and that was before the puppies! Rider uses humor to cope with his underlying issues, and in him I found a kindred spirit.
They are both so snarky with each other, Rider loves to get a rise out of Jalissa, and I am here for that. It gives the story that quirky spark that I love so much and reminds me why I love this genre so much! What really made me chuckle was their nicknames for each other on their phone contacts. I couldn’t read their texting communications without letting out a little giggle.
There were some pretty deep subjects that were tackled, including bullying, grief, and panic attacks, but they were handled with the utmost sensitivity and grace, each subject pointing right back to faith. I admired seeing that faith being fleshed out in such a beautiful way.
As Rider and Jalissa work together they begin to soften towards the other, as they each peel back the layers and realize they’re really only fighting themselves and not necessarily each other. The friendship and support the pair receive throughout the novel is wonderful and the work that they do for the community is refreshing. This was truly an uplifting story filled with grace and heart but also shows humor and support in the most beautiful way.
