When sleep deprivation skews her judgment, grieving young mother Mae risks everything to save a baby—only to wind up accused of a crime.
Now her freedom, her marriage, and her life are at stake.
She fights to clear her name, but can’t do it alone. Her husband is the only one she can turn to. But with their relationship crumbling, even he may not be on her side.
Will their struggles rekindle their love, or kill it?
If they don’t work together to overcome past wounds and current danger, Mae might finally end up resting in peace. Permanently.
Riveting read-all-night romantic suspense by an award-winning author.
Sleep Deprived previously appeared in the limited-time novella collection Dangerous Pursuits: 15 Stories From Today's Most Popular Mystery and Suspense Authors.
It’s been awhile since I’ve finished a book in a day, but today I zoomed through this taunting, suspenseful novella, yearning to know the truth: did Mae really steal a baby from a park, or is her story of a man kidnapping her and the baby the truth?
The question of is it all in Mae’s head had me going back and forth, questioning myself with each chapter. When you’re heart is broken like that your mind can take you to some dark places, so it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch for her to have performed this horrendous crime.
Warren, Mae’s husband, was one of my favorite characters, most likely because he reminded me of my own analytical husband. His steadfastness, and willingness to support his wife, even if he himself also has his doubts, was restorative, both to Mae and to me, showing just how important it is to have support of your spouse during difficult times.
This story first appeared in the Dangerous Pursuits novella collection, and I am so thankful that the author chose to publish it as a standalone. This was the perfect afternoon read, and one that lets you escape to a heartbreaking mystery that is every mother’s worst nightmare, in more ways than one.
