Heaven help him, but he wanted to know everything about this girl—er, woman. That look in her eye, the pain, the regret, the rejection. Been there. Felt that. He could share in all of those things with her. Like he’d done by telling her about his uncle’s car earlier, he could prove that he got it. Be a safe place for her.
He might not have all the words out loud, but he knew feelings, especially the deep ones that left scars. Even grease monkeys like himself didn’t escape military service without seeing too much at some point. Or know somebody who’d been through worse.
Pray.
The errant thought sent a cold shiver down his back. Dyson breathed deep and dug deeper, praying silently for direction and the ability to provide comfort. The word repeated itself, and he knew there was no avoiding the next words he needed to utter.
“Jenna, can I pray for you?”
Her whole body went tight. He felt her retreat and read the confusion in her face for a millisecond until she relaxed and nodded with a small but hollow smile.
“That’d be great.”
She extended her other hand, and he gladly accepted it. Now holding both, he gave them a tender squeeze and mentally asked God for the words.
A few minutes later, he had no clue if they’d helped or not, but the experience had certainly buoyed his spirit. New and completely foreign, but not wholly uncomfortable. Dyson couldn’t remember ever having prayed with anyone else before, except in church.
It probably wouldn’t be like that every time but praying with Jenna’s hands in his made him feel more like a man than he’d ever felt before.
