My Review 🖤
I have been hearing some wonderful things about the Doors to the Past series, and was so excited to finally get a chance to read one of them! Even though its' the third in the series, I chose Bridge of Gold as my first read because of the insanely gorgeous cover. Anyone that knows me knows my obsession with teal and yes I do think a cover is a great way to choose your next read. *wink*
Bridge of Gold involves a split timeline with one involving the gold rush era in the late 1800's, the people that helped build the Golden Gate Bridge in the 1930's, and the team in present day that is tasked with repairing the bridge. There is a lot of diving involved, which made a claustrophobic like myself a tad antsy, but I chose to focus on the gold and the mystery that surrounds each timeline.
In the 1930's you get to see a glimpse of the affects of the Great Depression, its claws reaching years, cloying at every life as America fought to pick up the pieces, and trying to reach normalcy again. Times were tough and people were desperate, and you can feel that tension with Luke and Margo, but I admired their perseverance and faith throughout their story.
In present time you get to know underwater archaeologist Kayla Richardson and Mark Andrews, the head of the bridge restoration. As they uncover clues to the past they bring up how diving was back then, and that was the part that gave me the most apprehension. To think of what diving was like back then, before self-contained air tanks were invented, baffles my mind. I can't imagine diving period, let alone with an added danger like the weight of all that gear or no air! Just thinking about it gives me a panic attack, but I digress...
One thing that surprised me about my reading of Bridge of Gold was my sudden fascination and hunger to learn more about San Francisco and the history of the Golden Gate Bridge. I've never had a attraction to bridges before, but now I want to know more!
Bridge of Gold is a pretty perfect novel. The pace was perfection, the dialogue and writing engaging, and the characters you can't help but love. The combination of love, mystery, faith, history, and the hunt for buried treasure was impeccable, everything balancing out. If I had one complaint I would say the climactic ending did feel a tad rushed and fell flat for me, but I did end the novel with a smile so I can't complain too much.
If Bridge of Gold is any indication of how this series is going to be, I have a feeling I'm going to be in for a real treat!
