Book Review of 'Duets' by Jordan Saez

Hello Bookworms!

I hope you guys had a wonderful Valentine's Day!  I got to be part of an engagement surprise and am happy to report that my sister is getting married!  It was one of the best Valentine's Day celebrations I've had in a long time and I feel so blessed that I got to celebrate new love.  I am the matron of honor so this year is taking a more festive turn and I am here for it!

Thinking about love had me thinking about youth and when I do I typically grativate towards YA books, like the one I am featuring today.  I hope you enjoy my thoughts on this Christian YA Fiction and don't forget to scroll to the bottom of this post and enter the amazing giveaway from JustRead Tours.

About the Book

Duets

Title: Duets
Series: Honeybrook High (prequel novella)
Author: Jordan Saez
Publisher: Independently Published
Release Date: February 2025
Genre: Christian YA Fiction

No one gets me at all, except for Hester. And she’s not even real. She’s a woman from the 1800s, but she totally understands what it’s like to hide love. So, she’d understand why hiding text messages is super important. But, since my dad became a Christian and all, I have to be super careful. But my parents are hiding things too, like why my mom is riding the struggle bus while she’s expecting my baby brother or why dad is talking to the other woman at the office.

My Review

Duets is the prequel to the Honeybrook High series and nothing like what I was expecting.  We get a glimpse into the life of Candy, a homeschooled teenager, and her mother, Leslie, a woman who runs a company with her husband and is also dealing with a tough pregnancy.

This book definitely took me a bit to get into.  The writing feels a bit on the choppy side, and I struggled to connect to the characters and delve into their world.  Once I got more into the story, it felt like I was reading Candy and Leslie’s diary, and it seemed like it flowed better, though I still wasn’t sure what the purpose of this story was.  It felt rudderless, but I believe this was done on purpose, leaving questions that I hope will be answered as we get more into the series.

There are some tougher subjects tackled, like addiction and predatory behavior, that were a little triggering for me, but it was handled with respect, which I am grateful for.  I am glad to have the opportunity to read Duets and can’t wait to see where the Honeybrook High series will take us.

My Rating: ★★★★
