“A sprained ankle and a snowstorm” bring Devon Fairchild into the home and lives of the McAllister family, particularly Finn McAllister, in Rescued at Christmas.
There is something quite endearing about Finn and Devon. I frequently struggle with loneliness and felt my heart going out to Devon from the beginning, a guarded woman who has no one but herself. Finn is one of those men that has goodness oozing out of him. It’s clear that he wants to do right by his family, and his helpful nature shines brightly throughout the story. Finn was quite easy to fall in love with.
The mystery behind Devon’s promise to her deceased brother and her whole reason for being in Maple Glen hangs in the air for a large part of the story. Her secrecy and reservations keep her at arm’s length from everyone initially, but the love and warmth that she receives from Finn and the McAllister family eventually thaws her heart.
Sweet little Kaya, Finn’s young niece, was a bright spot in this novel; her exuberance and positivity helped balance out the sadness that is clearly felt from the main characters. It’s clear both Finn and Devon are grappling with life, and Kaya, as well as Finn’s mother, Marion, insert the perfect sunshine to a more somber situation, and some of my favorite scenes involved them both.
Seeing the story come to fruition and finding out all the answers was quite satisfying and leads to a happy and gratifying ending. This novel is endearing and charming; the heartwarming Hallmark vibes paired perfectly with the twinkling lights that shined brightly around me the entire time I was reading. The overall flow and storyline are perfection and was a sweet addition to my holiday reads.
