He’s sworn to heal others, but at what cost to himself?

Step into the bustling streets of post-Civil War Philadelphia, where cultural injustice and class disparity run rampant. Amidst this chaos, Thomas, an aspiring doctor from the wilds of Missouri, struggles to find his place in a society to which he is unaccustomed. But when he meets debutante Emmaline Whitaker, she teaches him more than the social graces - she holds the key to his future. Only it is the independent, fun-loving Theodora Morse who holds his attention.

As Thomas navigates the complexities of high society, he must also confront his inner turmoil. When devastating news comes from home, Thomas is forced to use his waning faith to determine the desire of his heart. Will Thomas stand by his convictions and fight against the malaise of those around him, or will he choose the safety and comfort of his new life?

In this powerful Christian historical fiction, award-winning author Heidi Gray McGill weaves a poignant tale of love, sacrifice, and redemption in the City of Brotherly Love.

For Misty M. Beller, Lacy Williams, and Linda Ford fans, this standalone novel in the Discerning God’s Best series will capture your heart and leave you breathless. You’ll love this book if you enjoy gripping historical drama and compelling characters. Binge-read the entire series on Kindle Unlimited.

My Review

I really enjoyed reading this novel!  There is a nice, calming pace to this story but there is an underlying sense of darkness versus light lurking beneath the surface, which is what initially lured me into this world.

Witnessing the faith of both Thomas and Teddy fleshed out is so refreshing to see.  I love how it’s more than a religion to them but instead a relationship with their Savior. It’s such a beautiful picture and something I sadly find myself lacking in more times than not.

I also admired the workmanship.  Teddy and Thomas are both such hard workers which is how a lot of people were after the Civil War.  I appreciated gaining a glimpse of the struggles that many had during that time of picking up the pieces and I am in awe of the tenacity of this generation.  The side characters were the perfect compliments and were some of my favorite parts of the story.  The Douglass’s as well as the characters at the boarding house showed Thomas and Teddy so much love and support, giving what little they had to the young medical student and nurse, and being the picture of grace and hospitality when they needed it the most.

There is something very endearing about Healing of the Heart.  It’s hard not to be charmed by two characters that are truly selfless and trying to follow God’s direction for their lives.  Pair that with wonderful world building and strong writing and you’ve got a novel that will sweep you away with its heart and devotion.

My Rating: ★★★★★
