Book Review: Round Up by Rebecca Connolly

Series: Lost Creek Rodeo: Book 1
Publisher: Mirror Press
Release Date: April 14, 2020
Genre: Clean Sports Romance

Broken Heart? Check. Ranch retreat? Check. Handsome cowboy? ...Check.

The rules at Broken Hearts Ranch are pretty simple: no romance between staff and visitors. Ryan Prosper, rodeo has-been and ranch manager, hasn’t had a problem with that. His sister runs the therapy side of the place while he handles the ranch itself, and the balance has worked well. But when Talia James shows up for her turn at the retreat, things get a little more challenging.

Talia needs this therapeutic retreat badly, and hopes that it will be just what she needs to get unstuck after her tragic loss. The charming cowboy brother of her new therapist is a ray of sunshine she hadn’t anticipated, and spending time with him seems to do as much good as her sessions. But is her still broken heart ready for romance, and does she really have the heart to resist him?

Welcome to Lost Creek Rodeo!

Best friends at a small college in Texas, six cowboys rise to become pro-rodeo stars. Follow Ryan, Reid, Westin, Ford, Eric and Lars in these six swoony sports romances.

My Review ❤️

Welcome home!  That's all I could think of when I picked up Round Up by Rebecca Connolly.  I have missed my Swoony Sports so much and was excited to see the next sport is rodeo!  You would think being a Texas gal that I would be all about rodeos, but fun fact: I've never actually been to one and have only seen a few on TV.

After reading the Northbrook Hockey Elite series, and actually falling in love with hockey, I highly anticipated the Lost Creek Rodeo series!  Maybe I'll find an unknown rodeo passion I didn't know I had!

Since this is the first book of the series I had a feeling it would be more character based, and I was right.  In Round Up we are introduced to the Broken Hearts Ranch and it's proprietors, brother and sister duo, Kellie and Ryan Prosper.  Kellie turned their family ranch into a women's retreat for the broken hearted and Ryan has been hired on to help with upkeep of the ranch after an unfortunate incident with a bull ended his rodeo career, making him no longer able to compete.

I adore the whole therapeutic ranch idea, loving its mission so much, and enjoyed getting to know Ryan and Kellie.  Kellie's character really spoke to me, even though she was a supporting role, and made me wish I had someone like her in my life.  The down-to-earth, big-hearted feel of this novel is contagious, and I relished every second!

It's been years since Ryan has been in contact with The Original Six, the first rodeo team at their small Texas college that made him and his five friends rodeo royalty, and decides it's time to grieve his lost competition dreams, and get the old gang back together again to help out a local rodeo that has hit hard times.

The times with The Original Six remind me so much of when my family gets together, the adoration and warmth they have for each other makes them all feel like family.  I loved that so much!  There are a few swoon-worthy moments between Ryan and one of the guests at the Broken Hearts Ranch, and actually one of them involved skipping rocks!  Never thought I'd say I would swoon over two characters skipping rocks, but never say never I guess!

I have to say, I was disappointed that there wasn't more rodeo action, and I did feel like the ending was a bit rushed, and though it was happy one, my mind was left craving more details, more depth.  It was a sweet and simple ending, not much different than the characters themselves, so in hindsight I guess it is pretty fitting.  Plus, I know their story isn't over yet!

I've already started reading the second book, Chute Boss, and can already tell this is going to be one of those series that's going to continue to get better and better!  I love it!!
