Cassandra Linfield is a lady fossil collector who declares she will never marry as no man will ever take her studies seriously. When circumstances force her to travel to Town for the Season, Cassy infiltrates the hallowed portals of the Geological Society from which she has been banned. She is horrified when she comes face to face with her nemesis, the infuriating Earl of Rothbury.

Lord Rothbury is a gentleman-geologist with a turbulent romantic past. After a youthful disappointment, he vows never to fall in love again and makes the decision, instead, to seek out a convenient wife when he returns to England from his geological travels abroad.

Brought together by their close family ties, Cassy and Rothbury collaborate on a geological paper and discover a powerful attraction. Marriage, however, is the one subject they cannot agree upon. But when Cassy’s life is threatened, the two realize that love matters more than their objections.

My Review 🖤

When I first heard the title of this book I have to admit I was a little more than skeptical about what this book was all about, but the premise had me hooked.  I am a sucker for a good nemesis to lovers troupe, and was instantly intrigued from the moment I opened this novel.

Cassy is a heroine that I can get behind.  She is independent, smart, and has a good sense of self, not letting society precedent her, but living by her own rules.  She has chosen to pursue the life of spinsterhood and put her passions solely towards her love of geology.  Cassy knows that she doesn't need a man in her life to make her happy.

Enter Lord Rothbury and all his sass.  I have to admit I was with Cassy in my loathe of this man.  From his taunts and name calling, to being just as strong in character as Cassy, it didn't take long to see that she had met her match.  Of course, it took Cassy a lot longer to come to this revelation than it did me, and that was one of the things that charmed me about this character, but also broke my heart.  Despite her many arguments, Cassy's motivations are fueled by fear, something we call all identify with.  She is so focused on the odiousness words that are tossed between them to realize that both her and Lord Rothbury's view of one another evolve as the story progresses, and not only do they start to share a mutual appreciate for one another, but also respect and admiration.

I have read many regency novels in my day and one thing that has always bothered me is the dialect.  Many are written like the characters are are speaking in modern day with a few time-appropriate words splashed in for taste.  In The Earl's Lady Geologist, I felt completely immersed in the culture, both through the language and the depiction of the idyllic setting.  The vocabulary is absolutely spectacular and almost becomes a character of its own, truly transporting you back in time!

Though the speech had my mystified what really won me over was the characters.  Cassy and Lord Rothbury are so great together, but the supporting cast also gave me all the feels.  I absolutely adored the love and support within the family, and even then nemesis was one of those characters that you love to hate.  I was positively bewitched from beginning to end, and can't believe this is the first novel I've read by Alissa Baxter!  I promise you, it won't be my last.

My Rating: ★★★
