My Review

I love a good novella, and what’s better than one suspenseful novella? A collection of novellas. Double the suspense, double the enjoyment!

The beginning of Buried in Shadows by Dani Pettrey starts with the depiction of an avalanche, a scenario that comes straight out of my nightmares. Talk about intense! As I read more into this story, it dawned on me that I don’t think I’ve ever read a narrative that includes a terrifying avalanche that leads to being stranded on a mountain with a stalker. This fact alone made it hard for me to tear myself away.

The shorter chapter lengths help the pace of this suspense, giving it almost a clipped feel, adding more and more tension, and while the outcome wasn’t too surprising, it still had a satisfying conclusion and led perfectly to the next book in the collection.

Snowbound Secrets by Lynette Eason had a slower start than the previous story and felt more character-driven for a large part of the narrative but ended in a pretty intense and suspenseful way. I didn’t love the reasoning behind the sinister happenings and felt that plot point was a bit on the flimsy side, but seeing the perp get their just desserts was one of my favorite moments in the entire book.

While both stories happen simultaneously on different areas of the mountain, I didn’t notice too much overlap, which was a bit disappointing. I would’ve loved to have seen both stories come together in a unique way and not just geographically. The romantic aspects were decent, with sweet second chances and forced proximity, which is one of my favorite tropes, but honestly, I was here more for the electrifying suspense, and in this aspect, both stories delivered.
