Title: A Father's Dream
Series: Columbia River Saga #1
Author: Heidi Ennis
Publisher: At the Foot of Mountains
Release Date: December 11, 2023
Genre: Christian Historical Romance

A young Swedish immigrant determined to survive.

A mountain guide haunted by his past.

In 1883, in the Pacific Northwest, their lives collide in a faith-filled historical romance of courage, forgiveness, and second chances.

Johanna Amalia Nilsdotter Oman has left everything she knows behind. By crossing an ocean and a continent, she now faces the two-hundred-mile journey up the Columbia River into Washington Territory. Her father purchased land near Lyle with dreams of building a sawmill, and Johanna is determined that nothing—not distance, danger, or loneliness—will stop her from reaching their new home.

John is a man running from everything. Haunted by shame and regret, he has chosen the wilderness as his grave, determined to vanish into the mountains and die alone.

But before he can disappear, he accepts one final job: guiding a Swedish settler named Nils Oman into the rugged foothills above the Columbia River. The promised twenty dollars will buy him freedom—or so he believes.

But God has other plans. When Johanna’s path collides with John’s, both must face the truth they’ve been running from. In the shadow of towering evergreens and the roar of the Columbia, they will discover that even in the darkest wilderness, God’s love brings redemption, healing, and the courage to begin again.

Fans of Christian historical romance, frontier love stories, and faith-filled pioneer fiction will be swept away by this tender story of hope, forgiveness, and second chances in the wild beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Excerpt

March 1883

Remembering New York

“Have you seen my father, Nils Oman?”

Johanna had asked that question twenty times already in the pub that he frequented in the Irish district where they had found immigrant housing. It was filthy and disgusting and stunk worse than a pen of pigs.

Finally, the creepy old barkeep lifted his chin toward the back door.

She narrowed her eyes at the large red-haired man and nodded a curt thank-you. She hustled around the mess of drunken men and broken furniture and wondered if this was a regular scene on a Sunday morning. But the mess out the back door was even worse. She covered her nose and mouth with the end of her shawl to dilute the smell of vomit and urine that stung her nose. There were men amongst the mess of garbage in the back alley. Some had pulled shirts or coats up over their heads or caps down low and were curled on their sides or on their backs with their ankles crossed, asleep—maybe.

Pappa?” she whispered. “Nils Oman?”

Someone stirred and moaned in the corner. She stepped carefully over another man on his side, snoring softly, to the only one who had responded to her voice. He reeked of whiskey, whether it was on his clothes or his breath, or coming from his skin, she did not know. But then she saw the blood pooling in two places below him. She grabbed his shoulder and pushed him over, and he flopped to his back like a doll. But it was him. It was her father.

Pappa, is this your blood, ya?” She tried to look him over, noting the two locations of blood below his head and his ribs.

Förlåt—Hanna,” he whispered but never opened his eyes. He reached into his shirt, pulled out a crinkled yellow envelope, and tucked it into her hand. “Find the train, go west.”
