Taking a job at the local animal hospital, he’s paired with Gwen Bayer, the spitfire cowgirl working as his vet tech. She plans to get back on the rodeo circuit once her horse’s injury heals, and he’s headed for the city. But as their friendship deepens, it becomes impossible to deny their growing connection. How will they decide between the lives they’ve worked for—and the love that could change everything?

Welcome back to Three Springs, Texas! One of my favorite fictional worlds is back with another installment, and I was excited to dive in. When Hank and Gwen first meet, despite their initial attraction, they quickly realize that their relationship has a very short expiration date. For Gwen, her trip to Three Springs is a quick stop, and Hank has a promise to his recently departed wife that he must keep. It is this dilemma that keeps things interesting and adds to the will they/won't they of it all.
This story has a lot of ebb and flow. There were parts I found charming and entertaining (like the scene with the s’mores), but the inner dialogue became grating over time with the nicknames that Hank and Gwen internally had for one another. While it’s sweet at first, Hank referring to Gwen as “his cowgirl” and Gwen referring to Hank as “her cowboy” became so overused and went from saccharine to annoying quite quickly. It’s distracting to say the least, and that made me sad, as other than that, this story is quite charming.
There is a nice flow to the story and the banter between the main leads is great. Actually, all of the characters are likable, particularly little Henry, and the story itself is entertaining. I particularly loved the scenes at the fair and seeing Gwen in action, which was a personal highlight, as well as the whole happily-ever-after. I also love all the small-town vibes, which is one of the things I love the most about this series.
