Book Review of 'Echoes of a Silent Song' by Amanda Wen

Hello Bookworms!

Do you ever feel like you've lived multiple lifetimes? I feel this quite a bit when I look back at all I've lived through. I know I told you guys I was a performing arts major in my youth, and while part of that time was focused on dance, an even larger part was focused on singing and playing multiple instruments. As soon as I started reading the novel I am featuring today, I felt a wave of nostalgia that endeared me from the start.

I hope you enjoy my thoughts on this Split-Time Romance and don't forget to scroll to the bottom of this post and enter the amazing giveaway from JustRead Tours!

A split-time romance from an award-winning author

When a choral composer and conductor falls victim to creative block, he resorts to his fallback plan of teaching high school choir. Callum Knight's goal at Peterson High is simple: rediscover his muse, extract himself from teaching, and get back to Boston as quickly as possible.

As the long-suffering accompanist at the high school, Peterson-native Blair Emerson has watched the revolving door of choir directors and their negative impact on her choirs over the last few years. She is less than impressed when a disheveled Callum stumbles in on his first day.

But then they discover an unsigned, unfinished, and handwritten choral composition by a clear musical genius. Blair recalls rumors of Iris, a Peterson student from the 1970s who composed music but was found dead during her senior year. Blair and Callum work to determine if the piece is hers, and the truth they uncover shakes both of them to the core.

With rhythm and flair, Amanda Wen takes readers on an unexpected journey into the depths of a small town's history in this riveting first book in the Melodies and Memories duology.

My Review

Though I first fell in love with the cover, I quickly fell in love with the story even more. From the characters that felt real to the setting that felt nostalgic, I felt all the feels with this story. It was almost like I felt the Echoes of a Silent Song in my soul.

From the first chapter I was endeared. I was in all forms of performing arts in high school and college, including choir, so this felt instantly familiar to me. Iris’s story was especially touching, especially when she describes the musical inspiration that lives in her mind. Her attributing this gift to God was so poetically spoken that I almost felt like I could audibly hear the melody that she furiously scribbled down. The first time she talks about her gift was one of my favorite moments, and it only got better from there. While I enjoyed the present timeline with Callum and Blair, the story of the past told through the eyes of young Iris is what really captured my heart.

It was clear from the beginning that there was a tragedy that was waiting to be uncovered but a hope also paralleled this darkness, making the narrative as uplifting as it was powerful. The story took a sinister turn that I had not been expecting, and past pain and loss is echoed multiple times throughout this novel. There is also mentions of mental health and the ending of a life by their own hands. All of this tougher subject matter was handled perfectly and shed a sad light on how mental health was looked at in the twentieth century.

The last chapter literally gave me chills as I got to witness a powerful moment that truly makes the entire story come full circle. I enjoyed this novel so much that I am planning on listening to the audiobook as well so that I can experience it through a different medium. This is a powerful narrative with an important story that will echo in my heart for a long time.
