Excerpt

The mirror didn’t lie. I adjusted my tie for what felt like the hundredth time, staring at the man looking back at me. A man with a name printed on not one, but three nominations at the Country Music Academy Awards—Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Entertainer of the Year. A man I hardly recognized.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be here. Not after everything.
The muffled sound of giggles drifted from the next room, and I turned toward the door. My mom had Allora, my seven-year-old whirlwind, in stitches. “Mom, you sure you’re good?” I called out, stepping closer.
“We’re fine, Austin.” Mom’s voice was warm and steady, her pride unmistakable. She appeared in the doorway, Allora perched on her hip. My daughter’s grin lit up the room. “Go on, enjoy this night. You’ve earned it. The three of you deserve this.”
Allora squirmed free, landing on the bed with a bounce before throwing her arms around me. “Win, Daddy!”
“I’ll try, Cupcake.” I kissed her forehead, holding her a beat longer than usual. “Be good for Nana, okay?”
“I will!” she promised, her green eyes sparkling with excitement. My daughter’s grin lit up the room. She had her mother’s smile—bright, mischievous, a little untamed.
“I love you, baby girl.”
“Love you too!”
I turned to Mom, who rested a hand on my shoulder. “We’ll be cheering for you,” she said softly.
I nodded, swallowing past the tightness in my throat, and slipped out the door before I could second-guess myself.
The waiting car whisked me toward the venue, but my thoughts were scattered. The bright Nashville skyline blurred through the window as I stared at my reflection, trying to steady the storm brewing inside. It felt like just yesterday I’d been a man who’d sworn off music for good. And now this.

Married to her best friend–the boy she met at just thirteen–she’s also a homeschooling mom to one teenage daughter, an artist who is the spitting image of her dad. Jennifer Carr is a self-diagnosed social media addict, aka the Queen of the Doomscroll, and she’ll read just about anything she can get her hands on.

Her passions are wide and deep: coffee, music, learning, animals, and above all, writing. She holds a degree in Psychology, a Master’s in Marriage & Family Counseling, certifications in Life Coaching and Health & Wellness Coaching, and is a certified Brain Health Professional. But despite all that, books are where her heart truly belongs. The day she published her first book, everything shifted.
