Excerpts from Starry Nights
♥︎ Out of Play (Angela Ruth Strong)
If he needs me sticking close to the coach, then that might make me—dare I hope?—Assistant Coach. “How close?”
He presses his mouth shut for a moment like it’s going to pain him to answer. “Assistant Coach close.”
“Yes.” I pump my arms in the air and jump up and down as if Mia just scored a goal.
This draws more attention from strangers.
“What did she say?” One stranger asks.
Jacqueline is there to answer. “She said yes.”
Skylar holds out a palm to stop my celebration. He leans toward the strangers. “I asked her to be my assistant coach. That’s all.”
I laugh. What else would they think “she said yes” meant?
Oh.
I laugh harder, then share my joke with the strangers. “Coaching is so much better than a marriage proposal.”
“Thanks for that,” Skylar deadpans.
Like he doesn’t already have enough women pining after his soulful eyes and smirky-smirk.
♥︎ Lauren's Second Chance (Carrie Padgett)
Applying for a spot on a stupid reality TV show, a dating show, of all things. What had Lauren been thinking? Obviously, she hadn’t been in her right mind. Grief must still be making her do crazy things.
This was all Brooke’s fault. Brooke, one of Lauren Bishop’s best friends and the reason she was in Southern California, instead of home in Harts Leap, enjoying her summer break with swims in the lake, drinks on the dock with friends, and lazy days reading in the hammock.
Lauren slowed her racing thoughts as she shifted in the plastic chair, one of a dozen lining the hall of One Reality Productions in Hollywood, California. Mid-June sun shined through the building’s windows, making squares of light on the white marble floors. Other women occupies the rest of the seats. Each one was more beautiful than anyone Lauren knew.
A hallway door flung open, bounced off the wall, and a dark-haired woman hurried out, kitten heels clip-clopping on the floor.
“You wouldn’t know a ratings goldmine if you were handed a map with an X leading to a Nielsen family,” she called over her shoulder. She paused and leaned against a wall.
Everyone in the lobby and hall stared.
With a shuddering breath, she looked around, then straightened. “One Reality Productions is a sham, people. They don’t care about helping you find love.”
♥︎ Her Cowboy Champion (Tabitha Bouldin)
“I need you there. If it’s about the dress code, I have a stipend set up at the boutique. You can use it. It’s what our other photographers did.”
“Oh, well that makes it so much better.” She resisted the snort but clamped her arms over her stomach as another protest built on her lips.
Could he be telling the truth? Would he use the contract to manipulate her? Her grip tightened.
Maverick gave her one last calm look before he turned on his heel and walked away.
Aspen walked past leading Cobalt. She nudged Sage in passing. “Somebody still has a crush.” Her voice rose and fell in a sing-song.
“Not me.” She held her hands up and backed away. This thing with Maverick definitely was not a crush. Not even an inkling of romantic feelings remained in her. If it tried to take root again, she’d dig it out. Burn it to the ground if she had to.
“He’s right about the Gala. We always have a photographer there.” Aspen’s laughter followed her when she turned. “He never stopped talking about you. Once we’re home and we have a break between competitions, he’ll want answers. I hope you’re ready to give them.”
Nervous energy flooded her, and she hurried away with Aspen’s warning ringing through her head. Answers. She could not give Maverick the answers he wanted. They’d been friends back then. Nothing more. Even though she’d loved him. He’d never let on she meant anything to him.
♥︎ Love in the Lyrics (Bell Renshaw)
Gently, she shoved the horse’s head away as he came in for another slobbery kiss. But he thought it was a game. Shaking his head, he gave a loud whinny.
“Hey there, fella.” The voice spoke from the horse’s window to the interior of the stables and sounded deep and calm.
Buster, seeing a new human option for affection, headed over to the window. Libby didn’t dare look up. One move and she’d draw attention to her hiding spot. As long as this guy petted the horse and moved on, she’d be safe.
But Buster had other plans. He tossed his head a few times and then, unfortunately, turned back to her. Holding her breath, she heard a few booted steps and let out a low sigh just as Buster’s wet nose made a move. He snuffled at her face, and despite everything she tried, she couldn’t keep the giggle in.
The instant the sound was out, the footsteps stopped. Her hands clasped over her mouth. She didn’t move. She didn’t even blink.
But slowly, there was one step. Then another.
And then, “Who are you?” The earlier, softer tone directed at the horse was gone.
Libby didn’t move. She didn’t even take her hands down. Maybe it was foolish, but there was a part of her brain that thought, If I don’t move, he won’t be able to see me.
“You know I can see you, right?”
Rats.
