Book Review of 'Never Hire a Hero' by Regina Scott

Happy Friday Bookworms!!

We are on the countdown to Christmas people!  Ten days!!  Can you believe it?!!  I know I can't!

I've surprised myself this year.  Normally I am the queen of procrastination, but this year I've been more on my game, most likely due to the fact that I've been very sick the entire season, so the times that I've been out of bed have been precious and I have no time to waste.  I am not completely done with my shopping, but what I do have is wrapped and under the tree, which is unheard of in my house.  Maybe I'm turning over a new leaf this year.  One can hope, as I hate waiting until the last minute.

One thing I can't wait to share with you is another review!!  The novel that I am highlighting today is not necessarily a Christmas story in and of itself, but there is a Christmas celebration that will put all readers in a festive mood, so I hope you enjoy my thoughts on Never Hire a Hero and that you all have a blessed weekend!

About the Book

Never Hire a Hero

Title: Never Hire a Hero
Series: Fortune's Brides: Guarding Her Heart #3
Author: Regina Scott
Publisher: Edwards and Williams
Release Date: December 11, 2023
Genre: Sweet Regency Romance

Three children and a marriage of convenience may be his biggest challenge yet

A former elite soldier, Stephen Roth was trained to be ruthless as he served as bodyguard for kings and princes. So why would his English patroness, Lady Belfort, and her cat, Fortune, arrange for him to take a position as the tutor to the heir of Alldene Castle and the boy’s siblings? And why does the children’s mother, Lady Alldene, look at him with shining eyes, as if he could be some sort of hero? This was not the sort of challenge he bargained for!

A peer in her own right, Thea, Countess of Alldene, was raised in Alldene Castle and taught how to rule over it. But nothing prepared her for the death of her husband and the villainy of the man he appointed as guardian for her children. If a tutor with a razor-sharp gaze will prevent that man from taking her sons away from her, she’s willing to put up with Roth’s rough-shod ways.

But the castle holds a secret that may prove Thea’s undoing. When danger threatens, she turns to the one man who might be able to keep them all safe. Could a marriage of convenience over Christmas prove that heroes can turn up in the least likely places?

If you like warm, witty historical romances, with a touch of mystery, then you’ll love this historical romance by an award-winning, bestselling author.

“All readers who love Regency and historical romances need to pick up stories by Regina Scott. The author has never disappointed me. I am very happy to recommend any of her novels.” – Huntress Reviews

My Review

Never Hire a Hero is quite an entertaining read, and one that was quite unexpected.

Stephen Roth is hired by Thea to be a tutor to her two sons, but what neither Roth nor Thea know is the powerful influence Roth with infuse into the household that is still in mourning after the death of their patriarch.

Roth pairs with the children nicely, and some of my favorite parts were the whole family doing normal things, like taking a meal together, and bearing witness to their interactions as Roth instructs the children.  It’s clear from the beginning they all have an undeniable chemistry, as Roth is able to turn this household on its head and help for the better.

There were so many scenes that captured my heart, and the more I read the more I fell in love, which isn’t surprising since a marriage of convenience is one of my favorite troupes.

I do have to admit that this novel took me a few chapters to get into.  I was a little bored until the mysterious occurrences intensified and then I couldn’t put it down.  I did guess the culprit early on, but it didn’t take away from the dramatic ending whatsoever, and I was elated to see such a picturesque resolution.

Overall, the novel has a nice flow, the characters are wonderful (especially the children), and I loved the overall premise.  Though it does have a slow start, it is well worth it to stick it out as it ended up being a pretty fun read that put me even more into the holiday spirit.

My Rating: ★★★★

About the Author

Regina Scott

Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing. Since her first novel was published, her stories have traveled the globe, with translations in many languages including Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese. She now has now published more than 65 works of warm, witty romance and more than 1 million copies of her books are in reader hands. She and her husband of 30 years reside in Washington State on the way to Mt. Rainier. Regina Scott has learned to fence, dressed as a Regency dandy, driven four in hand, and sailed on a tall ship, all in the name of research, of course.
