Book Review of 'The Shifting Current' by Dani Pettrey

Happy Cinco de Mayo Bookworms!

Do you celebrate Cinco de Mayo?  I normally celebrate with some amazing Mexican food and maybe my favorite Mexican dessert, flan.  Recently I have been craving a really good taco or nachos, so my goal is to go squelch my craving.  What's your favorite Mexican restaurant? My in-laws are Hispanic, so my favorite 'restaurant' is my mother-in-law's kitchen.  I just wish she didn't live eight hours away from me.

Today I am also celebrating a new release from an author that is new to me.  So, grab a taco and continue scrolling for me thoughts on this new romantic suspense.

An elusive killer. A false identity. A deadly maze of lies.

When Coast Guard Investigative Service Special Agent LOGAN PERRY’s beloved grandfather is murdered, Logan races to his hometown of Cauldron Creek, New Mexico to investigate the murder. His teammate and friend, EMMY THORTON, insists on joining him. Not a good idea—not when he loves her, but carries a secret that he knows will tear them apart.

Emmy knows Logan will pursue the investigation no matter the cost, and she won’t let the man she loves plunge into a dangerous situation alone. She needs to be at his side, even if he believes friendship is her only reason for joining him.

What looks like a robbery gone wrong rapidly shifts, drawing Emmy and Logan into a dizzying maze where nothing is as it appears. Every lead slips through their fingers as threats against them grow deadlier at each turn. Having only each other to rely on, their love for one another deepens, but will they live long enough to admit their attraction to each other?

They’re in the killer’s sights. One wrong move puts their future together and their lives on the line.

My Review

When a book starts with one word, and that word is “death” you know you’re in for one wild ride!  I enjoyed this novella so much! So much suspense in one tiny, heart-pounding package!

Logan and Emmy are partners and special agents for the Coast Guard's Investigative Services division, and they both have had feelings for each other for a long time, but for different reasons they’ve left their feelings under wraps.  It’s clear to see why they make such great partners in the field, so it would make sense that they’d be just as great in a romantic capacity.  I love how organic Logan and Emmy feel together. They complement one another perfectly and it’s clear that they belong together.

I didn’t realize when I started reading The Shifting Current that it was the finale in the series, which shows just how great it is as a standalone.  This is the first book I’ve read in this series, or by author Dani Pettrey, but I am now an instant fan, and must read the rest of this series!

The suspense is constant, leaving you on the edge of your seat the entire time you read.  The entire cast is perfection, with the bad guys putting a literal knot in my stomach, and the good guys capturing my heart.  I did wish there was a bit more mystery, as there is no surprise twists or turns to keep you guessing, but the suspense is so spot on I wasn’t even really mad about it being so predictable!

This was a quick read that packed a powerful punch and introduced me to a wonderful new author.  Yes, I read the ending before the beginning, but now I get to go back and see how Logan and Emmy’s relationship was leading up to this point.  Who doesn’t love an origin story?
