A collection of lost books holds the clues to her family's legacy...and her future.

Hope Sparrow has mastered the art of outrunning her tragic past, learning never to stay anywhere too long and never to allow anyone control over her life again. Coming to Wanishin Falls in search of her family's history already feels too risky. But somewhere in the towering stacks of this dusty old bookshop are the books that hold Hope's last ties to her late mother—and to a rumored family treasure that could help her start over.

Only, the bookshop is in shambles, and the elderly owner is in the beginning stages of dementia and can’t remember where the books lie. To find the last links to the loved ones she's lost, Hope must stay and accept help from the townsfolk to locate the treasured volumes. Each secret she uncovers brings her closer to understanding where she came from. But the longer she stays in the quaint town, the more people find their way into the cracks in her heart. And letting them in may be the greatest risk of all...

MY REVIEW

In The Bookshop of Secrets I found it all: mystery, intrigue, heartbreak, hope, love and books! This novel truly has it all and while it wasn’t always the easiest story for me to digest it left me with all the feels, and then some.

One sign of a truly wonderful author is when they can grab the reader, if if they are triggered, and have them so transfixed on the story that they push past their pain, and get lost in the narrative. This is the first book I’ve read by Mollie Rushmeyer, and man does she know how to paint a beautiful picture with her words. There is a depressive mood to this story that was instantly felt, but as you read further along, you begin to see the sliver of light that begins to shine brighter and brighter, a beacon of hope, the soothing balm of grace and truth.

In truth, The Bookshop of Secrets was a tough read for me. In a week it will be a year since I lost my grandfather to Alzheimer’s, and while I was reading I received word that another Alzheimer’s sufferer in my family has been put on hospice, the nurses not thinking she’ll make it to the end of the week. No, this isn’t the main focus of this story, but one of the supporting characters is showing signs of this horrific disease, and it was very much a trigger for me, especially right now. Not to mention the PTSD that Hope, the heroine suffers as a result of past abuses. I too have struggled with the same and did find those moments jarring.

Still, I found a kindred spirit in Hope. A fellow lover of books, both of us marked with scars of past abuses, both finding refuge and circumvention in books, and both with dreams bigger than our circumstances. Watching her personal growth throughout the narrative was like a breath of fresh air, showing that we can rise above our past, and rush to a bright future. Hope is aptly named, and that feeling was contagious.

Ronan is the perfect match to Hope and the mystery they share once Hope opens up was a little more than intriguing. The supporting cast is masterful, and I feel in love with each and every one of them right along with Hope. The setting is picturesque, my mind filled with dark academia and rows and stacks of books. I could even “smell” that wonderfully intoxicating smell of old books. This read truly touched all the senses and is completely immersive.

Though there is tough subject matter do not let that deter you. This is a wonderful story that has such a beautiful heart at its core and everything unsavory is handled masterfully. So, grab a copy, get lost in the literary, and enjoy the myriad of literary quotes, mystery, and Hope.

My Rating: ★★★
