ABOUT THE BOOK
He’s running from his past—she’s running from her future.
Fiona McGowan, a beautiful Scottish widow without hope for a family of her own, travels to St. Mary’s Convent to become a nun. In route she is kidnapped by handsome Highlander Adam MacIntosh in a case of mistaken identity. Adam, laird of the MacIntosh clan, is attempting to free his brother held captive by the rival Fergus clan. The failure of his plan leaves him reeling with betrayal, death, and a wee babe in sore need of a healer.
Though forced to delay her vows, Fiona’s anger and distrust thaws as rising tensions within Adam’s clan threaten to ignite an uprising. She chooses to aid her noble but beleaguered captor in his quest to restore peace among his Highland clan. But as the two learn to trust each other, the question remains: Can they move beyond the hurts of their past, or will the past be their undoing?
MY REVIEW
I love historical fiction, but I typically stay in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and rarely gravitate back any further than that (unless I am reading the Bible, of course). So, when I do go to a time period that’s out of the norm I am pretty apprehensive, and Hers to Love was no exception.
Though I was quite jostled as I began reading, I was quickly absorbed into the narrative. The Scottish brogue that is used throughout was something I had to get used to, but once I got my bearings the story flowed nicely. Quite a bit is going on in the story, and all of it ties back to Adam, laird of the MacIntosh clan. There is a bitter rivalry between their clan and the neighboring Fergus clan, and his wife and brother have run off together, leaving him and the whole MacIntosh clan in a state of shock and anger.
One of the biggest highlights for me was seeing Adam’s transformation, going from a place of pain and bitterness, to one of pure joy, again choosing love, and overcoming his fears. And all because of Fiona. I loved the connection between Adam and Fiona. The attraction is evident from the beginning, even amid their raging conflicting feelings, the mood electrifying when they are together, and you can feel the heat through the pages.
The shining jewel on the crown that is Hers to Love is sweet Bonnie and baby Anna. Even during the darker moments of the story these two are often the relief, exuding innocence and excitement. Speaking of excitement, the battle scenes are fierce and quick, putting you right in the action, without being graphic.
I was absorbed in this world, making me fall in love with medieval Scotland, and the story of Adam and Fiona. There is plenty of drama, the will they/won’t they tug-of-war almost a character of its own with its consistency, making it hard to put the book down.
In all honesty, I didn’t have high hopes for this book, but I was incredibly surprised. Sherrinda Ketchersid is an incredible talent, her writing captivating, the worldbuilding unparalleled. I adored Hers to Love and cannot recommend it enough.
