Children aren’t the only ones who can disappear.

Driven by ongoing grief and relentless dreams, Holden Kelly is determined to track down the child his brother Gage abducted eight years earlier. The kidnapping that saved Matthew Gibson’s life had cost Gage his. Proving his brother hadn’t sacrificed his life for nothing might be the only way Holden can start fully living his again. And it could be the last chance he has to find his way back to the wife he loves but who is also mired in grief and a crisis of faith.

Mikayla Grant has nightmares of her own. A road trip with private investigator Jax Rodriguez—a man she is drawn to even though his primary goal seems to be to drive her crazy—can’t be the way to heal from a terrible loss. Can it?

As Holden, Mikayla, and Jax follow the missing child’s trail from Toronto to Chicago, their mission is not as secret as they thought. Someone knows they are coming and will stop at nothing to prevent them from finding Matthew.

And to make sure that no one ever hears from the three of them again.

My Review 💜

After reading Guarded exactly a year ago, I have been anticipating the next installment in The Night Guardians series for awhile, hoping that a few of my qualms from Guarded would be put to rest.  I had craved more plot twists, less predictability and hoped to fall in love with the leads in the next volume, and I am happy to report that this series continues to get better and better!

Though this can be read as a standalone, I think knowing the characters from the second book really helped me key in and click with this novel, as it immediately drew me in from the first chapter.  There are multiple story lines all going at once, but are interwoven in such a way that they never confuse you, but instead take you on a rollercoaster of emotions.   The suspense is almost immediate, and doesn't let up until the very end.

Holden and Christine's story line had my heart breaking throughout the book.  The raw and real emotion made my chest tighten, and brought waves of memories for me.  Though I didn't experience exactly what they had to endure at the beginning of the book (no, I won't spoil it), I have went through two times in my life where I wasn't able to welcome another child in my family.

The pain is excruciating, and the author does not hold back on highlighting the stages of grief as Holden and Christine travel down a path they never thought they'd be on.  I loved the message of God's love even when He feels absent, and witnessing Christians questioning their faith, and struggling with life, as this is relatable on so many levels.  It is also a great reminder that everyone grieves differently, and that's ok.

Hands down, my favorite couple in the book is Mikayla and Jax, their banter reminding me so much of how my husband and I used to be when we first started dating.  Witty and charming, they both give the novel a much needed touch of romance, and give those moments of comic relief amid the darker situations that are lurking all around them.

Driven has a great flow, a poignant message, and would be a great book club read, especially if you utilize the discussion questions at the end of the novel, and discuss all the many levels that are within these pages.

Driven is a novel that truly has it all: suspense, intrigue, emotional grief and trauma, and best of all faith and love.  I am excited to say that I did get a little twist that I wasn't bargaining for, which thrilled me to no end, as this is something that I felt was missing in the previous novel, and I am now eagerly awaiting the fourth and final installment of the series, Forged, which is set to come out in September 2022.

My Rating: ★★★
