Genre: Religious Historical Fiction

Son of the Father is a creative storytelling of Barabbas, the man released in the hours leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion.
Long before his life is traded for Jesus', Barabbas' family is ruined, a consequence of his own rage. Consumed with guilt he resolves to put things right, but this seems an impossible task. Huge debts, a man bent on revenge, theft, and murder hang above his head.
As Barabbas struggles to atone and restore his family's honor and to bring himself out of poverty, he meets the new religious teacher. Barabbas can't bring himself to trust this wandering preacher even though his family follows Him, until Barabbas' life is spared, costing more than he thought possible.
In this thought-provoking and gripping novel by debut author Andrew Stone, readers will discover a much deeper meaning as the lives of Barabbas and Jesus intertwine between the pages and weave a story of love and sacrifice.
My Review ♥️

Let me preface this by stating that I first thought this was a Biblical fiction, which after reading the authors note I realized it wasn't.  Son of the Father is rooted in the Biblical story of Jesus but told from the perspective of Barabas, the man that should've been crucified instead of Jesus.

Having never given much thought to Barabas and his life, I appreciated the authors creativity of intertwining Barabas's story with the actual Biblical account of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  The "artistic license" of the author brought about cringe-worthy attributes that were hard for me to stomach, as well as redundant words and phrases, and dialogue that seemed unfit for the time period made this a tough read for me.

The blinding self-centeredness of every character is grating on the nerves, as well as their vulgarity and brashness, to the point that I was truly saddened and sickened, wondering if there really are people that can be this selfish.

In saying all that, the last quarter of the book redeemed the novel for me and I closed the book with conflicting emotions.  Seeing a story that I've known my whole life through a perspective I've never perceived was incredibly thought-provoking, and made me thankful for my faith.  If this was the authors intent I would say he succeeded.

While this book was quite bothersome to me I do not regret reading this account, though I will caution any future readers that this is NOT a Biblical fiction, and to be prepared to see a very twisted tale and dark side of Biblical accounts and characters that you've most likely never thought of before.

My Rating: ★★★
