My Rating: ★★★★

Genre: Clean Romance

Jane Hartford fell head over heels for Jackson at the tender age of fifteen. She spent most of high school pining for him, until she realized he wasn't going to see her as anything more than his baby sister's best friend. Now she finds herself single with a daughter, a broken heart, and songs that remind her of a long lost love.

Jackson Wright is a man living with regret. His biggest one, never acting on his feelings for Jane. When he returns to Bellebrook, the town they grew up in, he literally runs into her and his world gets tossed upside down and sideways.

This time, Jackson isn't willing to give up. With a meddling sister eager to push both of them together, he believes things might actually work out. That is, if they can overcome the heavy baggage they both carry. Follow Jackson and Jane as they revisit their past, figuring out what went wrong so long ago.

Will they learn they have the power to make things right in the present?

My Review

We all had that one crush in high school that we dreamed about one day falling in love with us.  For some, that crush had a crush on us as well and we never even realized it!  It actually happened to me and I didn't find out until years later.  That is exactly what happens to Jane, only her crush was her best friend's older brother, Jackson, and the emotional connection went so much deeper than my sweet little high school crush.

When it comes to crushes we can all relate, but what really brings the heart to this story is the tragedy that both Jane and Jackson have to endure since their youth.  Each chapter has a song that embodies its theme and really brings the book to life in a very unique, and sometimes heartbreaking, way.  The book jumps between both Jack and Jane's perspective's both now and various times throughout their pasts, highlighting past pain, truths, missed opportunities, and how they got to where they are now.

Beautifully written, Mylissa Demeyere's debut novel hits it out of the park, exciting me for future works, like the sequel to The Songs of You and Me entitled The Songs That Brought Me Back.

As a reader, you really connect with these characters and what they are going through.  My favorite aspect of the story is sweet little Emma, Jane's daughter, who brings smiles and sunshine into an otherwise dark and gray situation.  Though there are parts that start to feel redundant, this is my only complaint, and I can honestly say that I enjoyed The Songs of You and Me and know that you will too.
