Book Review of 'Names of God: Knowing Peace' by Grace Fox

Happy Monday Bookworms!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend. We kept things pretty low-key due to the family feeling a little under the weather (gotta love allergies!), but we were able to go to a small family barbecue on Saturday, and I enjoyed getting to see people I don’t get to see that often. I cherish these moments so much, as it seems as time passes, it becomes harder and harder to get everyone together.

During our time together, one of the topics that was brought up was faith, and one thing that’s always fascinated me is the different names for God in the Bible, which is exactly what the book I am featuring today delves deeper into. I hope you enjoy my thoughts on this Devotional Study and don’t forget to scroll to the bottom of this post and enter the amazing giveaway from JustRead Tours!

Title: Names of God: Knowing Peace
Series: Names of God Devotional Studies #2
Author: Grace Fox
Publisher: Aspire Press
Release Date: July 8, 2025
Genre: Christian Living; Devotional study

Peace.

The very word evokes images of serene landscapes and quiet stillness. In today’s chaotic world, peace is a valuable commodity. The Bible has a lot to say about peace, claiming that God himself is the ultimate source. In this follow-up to Names of God: Living Unafraid, Grace Fox reflects on how the following names of God point to the peace our souls so desperately crave:

Yahweh Shalom—The Lord Is Peace
Abba—Father
El Shaddai—God Almighty
El Roi—The God Who Sees Me
Yahweh Ori—The Lord Is My Light
Yahweh Nissi—The Lord Is My Banner
Immanuel—God with Us

Knowing Peace uses examples from Scripture and compelling real-life stories to illustrate how these names can bring inner peace amid life’s storms. Each session includes a guided prayer, reflection questions, and a video link providing additional insights from Grace. Perfect for individual or group study, this new addition to the Names of God series will encourage and inspire readers to draw near to God and receive his peace that passes understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Spotlight on 'What's the Story, Morning Glory?' by Julie Lessman

Happy Friday Bookworms!

I first want to send out all the thoughts, prayers, and well wishes to everyone who has been affected by Hurricane Helene.  My mother and stepfather, as well as several other family friends live on the west coast and in northern Florida and did not evacuate. Yesterday was terrifying for me as I watched the hurricane approach and was getting updates from my parents as well as the news.  Water rising, clouds swirling, tide quickly rising, and waters rushing toward their home.  I know this is just the beginning as the damage is assessed and so many further inland are now dealing with Helene's wrath and my prayers are with you all.

Today I am casting the spotlight on another devotional that has a unique twist that I think you will enjoy so enjoy the excerpt below and don't forget to scroll to the bottom of this post and enter the amazing giveaway from JustRead Tours!

About the Book

What's the Story, Morning Glory?

Title: What's the Story, Morning Glory?
Author: Julie Lessman
Publisher: Julie Lessman LLC
Release Date: October 1, 2024
Genre: Memoir Devotional (half fiction/half nonfiction)

“DEAR LORD, JULIE ... OUR WHOLE LIFE IS IN THIS BOOK!"

My heart went out to my sweet husband as he walked into our kitchen one day with a noticeable gulp, ashen-faced after reading my latest novel.“Yes, I know, babe,” I said with a repentant smile and a conciliatory hug, “but nobody really knows that.”
Ahem. Until now ...

Trust me, "What’s the Story, Morning Glory? A Memoir Devotional with a 'Novel' Approach to Practical Christianity" is not a book I wanted to write. As a novelist, I have never been partial to nonfiction, either reading it or writing it, but I had little choice when God convinced me otherwise through a number of point-blank arm-twistings I couldn’t deny and not-so-gentle proddings from family and friends.

Despite all the encouragement, I wasn’t really sure where to begin. “It will be fiction and nonfiction combined,” the Holy Spirit whispered within, and just like that, the idea for this book took flight. First, I would tell my “real” and very personal story behind the life-lesson stories in my novels, then I would follow it up with the excerpt from my books where I teach that same life lesson to my characters, finally culminating in corresponding Scriptures, a bulleted “Takeaway” list, and a related prayer.

Thus, What’s the Story, Morning Glory: A Memoir Devotional with a “Novel” Approach to Practical Christianity was born. A memoir devotional that when combined with scenes from my novels, becomes a “novotional” where I relate the life lessons God personally taught me through His Word. I am simply a child of God who applied these lessons and Biblical precepts to every situation in my life and consequently, saw nonstop answers to prayer and blessings galore. It is my profound hope and prayer that through my own very simple and personal stories and examples, I can do the same for others. Therefore, the format for each chapter of this book will be as

1. The Real Story (How I learned and applied the spiritual lesson in my own life)
2. The Novel Story (The scene where I teach the spiritual lesson to my characters)
3. The Scripture Story (Scriptures applicable to the spiritual lesson)
4. The Takeaway Story (Bulletized points for spiritual lesson in easy-to-read/apply format)
5. The Prayer Story (Specific prayer related to the spiritual lesson)

I pray this bottom-line, albeit somewhat quirky, 1-2-3 devotional blesses you as much as God's spiritual life lessons have blessed me!

Hugs,
Julie Lessman

Kingdom Family Devotional

Dr. Tony Evans has been one of my favorite Christian speakers for a long time.  I've listened to his radio program The Alternative off and on for years and I have been a follower of his daughter's Priscilla Shirer and Chrystal Evans Hurst and their ministries for awhile as well.  Another thing I love is that Dr. Evans preaches right down the street from me at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, Texas.

I started reading Kingdom Woman which Dr. Evans co-wrote with his daughter, Chrystal Evans Hurst awhile back and it has been life changing.  When I was offered the chance to review another book in the "Kingdom" series I jumped at the chance.

This time Dr. Evans paired with his son Jonathan Evans and created the Kingdom Family Devotional.  If you've been following my reviews for any length of time you know I'm a sucker for a good devotional.  We all lead such hectic lives that some days you just need a quick, little reading to get you focused back on what really matters.

In the world we live in today a family devotional time is essential.  Having two tweens and a husband that works 50+ hours a week it's hard to get us all together.  In the introduction, it is suggested to read the devotional during mealtime but for our family that doesn't work in our season of life.  We haven't been eating dinner together due to my husband's schedule but he is always home before our boys go to bed so last month we started getting the boys to bed fifteen minutes before their bedtime and we started the Kingdom Family Devotional together.  The boys were instantly hooked and we all loved how short the devotionals were.  Every night I would ask about the previous night's topic and both the boy remembered!  Having a child with Asperger's and another child with ADHD this says a lot!

This devotional has different themes for each week including love, forgiveness, servanthood, and humility among others.  Some days you just read and discuss what that day's lesson is about and other days they have fun little activities to make the lesson come to life.  I have to admit the games were fun for me and the boys but my husband didn't get into them as much as we did.  There are only five readings a week so if you have to miss a day for whatever reason you have time to get caught up before the next week which is also important for a busy family like ours.

All in all, this is a wonderful 52-week devotional that could be read over and over again.  This would also be a wonderful gift for any young family and really helps tie in all of the "Kingdom" books.  I highly recommend this wonderful devotional.

Authentic Living

This year for Christmas I gave out several Christian devotionals to family members.  Everyone leads such hectic lives that it's hard to have time to get into God's Word yet every day we should intentionally try.  With Authentic Living by Richard Exley you can actively pursue Christ on a daily basis and enjoy some much needed quiet time with the Lord.

Each entry is dated which I actually love.  Normally I do not like each devotional being dated.  If you fall behind you beat yourself up and either get frustrated and give up or spend more time catching up instead of taking those precious moments to come into the presence of the Lord.  I did not feel that at all with this devotional.  All you have to do is go to today's date and you have a short devotional that is relevant to every day life as well as a Bible verse and a simple prayer to end each day.

This is the first book that I've read by Mr. Exley and I was a little more than impressed.  Despite each days devotional being short, the author has a way of immediately pulling you into that certain days topic in a deep and personal way.  These devotionals are more that just daily readings that make you feel good.  Every day has one line, verse, or prayer that pushes you to meditate on that thought, often taking your study to a deeper level.  You can't find that in every devotional.

Authentic Living is a wonderfully refreshing devotional and one that I am blessed to read each day.  I've read numerous devotionals in my Thank you for visiting my blog and being apart of the First Look blog tour.  Go grab a copy of this amazing devotional.  I promise you won't regret it.

365 Morning Pocket Prayers

"Prayer is a privilege"

This is the first line of the introduction of the 365 Prayer Devotional.  When I read this line something just hit me.  Prayer IS a privilege and one that I more often than not take for granted.  This is why I am so thankful that God has put this book in my hand.

At first glance this little book is gorgeous!  The cover is so serene and has a leather-like feel to it.  It's a beautiful shade of blue and is small enough to carry around with you in a purse or backpack and does not take up much space on a desk.

The days are numbered but not by specific dates which I like.  Some people like to read straight through while others like to jump around and the 365 Pocket Morning Prayers allows you to whatever is comfortable for you.

Each prayer is a specific topic so if you wake up struggling with courage there is a prayer for that.

As you can see each day is divided into three parts: the theme, the prayer, and a Bible verse.  The prayers are short, to the point, and relevant to our lives today.  I do not believe that prayers must be written for Christians.  That's one thing that is awesome about our faith!  We can tell the Father whatever is on our hearts whenever we want but there are times when the words do not come as easily and this is book just perfect for those times.

I've been keeping my copy on my bedside table and even though I haven't been using it every single day I love that it is there if and when I need it.  With Christmas around the corner, this would be a wonderful stocking stuffer for anyone in your life! What better gift to give than to start their day with prayer!

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
