Her chest felt like it was on fire. She tried to breathe, tried to hold back the terror, but it washed over her in giant waves that crashed one after the other. On the edges of the pain, she could hear Matt praying for her, and for the first time in a long time, she didn’t want it to stop.

Air began to fill her lungs more easily. Heavy tears streaked down her cheeks. Her forehead sank onto his shoulder, his arms coming around her.

On the edges of her mind, she heard her cell phone ringing. Chelsea pulled it from her back pocket. She stared at the caller ID. Gabby.

“Chelsea,” came Gabby’s frantic voice.

“Are you and Lynelle okay?” Chelsea grasped Matt’s shoulder, drawing him closer so he could hear what Gabby was saying. “Where are you?”

Gabby yelped, and then another voice came on the phone. “That’s enough talking.”

“Alek! Don’t do this. Please, Alek.”

“You needed a little motivation. I think you have that now.”

Chelsea squeezed the phone tighter. This was all her fault.

“They’ll both be fine,” Alek said. “So long as you do what you’re supposed to do.”

“You mean the diamonds,” she said.

“Bring them to me, and all your problems disappear,” Alek said. “You have one week…”
