“We begin where we always begin.” He faced her and braced his hands on her shoulders. “At the beginning. We don’t look back, we don’t peer over our shoulders. We move forward.”
“You were always good at doing that, Hank.” She whispered the words before lifting her gaze to his. “You set a course of action and went with it. Always. No matter how tough your life was when you were little. You trudged along, looking ahead.”
“You make me sound like a turtle.”
A tiny smile softened her mouth. Her very pretty mouth. “Then I’m the hare in flight. But we both know who won that race.”
“Is it a race, Heather?”
She wrinkled her nose like she’d done a long time ago. “Isn’t it always? At least to me. Why is that? Why do I have to show people how much I can do, how good I am, all the time?”
He knew why. They all knew why. “Because you had to work so hard to be noticed. You tried to be the best at everything and generally succeeded. Alicia won by default because she was Fee’s flesh and blood. You weren’t.”
Her eyes went narrow. She gazed out, then looked at him. “Alicia explained that to the kids. Did you know that?”
He shook his head.
“She told them that Fee wasn’t nice to me, and that they should forgive her for that, but they should realize that it was a mean thing to do.”
“Sounds like Alicia.”
“Well, how do I compete with that?” Heather grumbled. She moved to the fence rail, propped her elbows and put her chin in her hands. “I’m not the nice one. I’m not one bit forgiving. And I don’t even go to church, so how am I supposed to turn myself around in order to help these children?”
“Nothing like a major bend in the road to instigate change. In us. In our surroundings.” He bent and tipped her chin up, just a little. Just enough to see her eyes darken and widen. To see the spark of interest she tried to hide. “If you go back to Mount Haven, you’ll have to do more than change you.” He indicated the Bronson house with a thrust of his chin. “You have to change them. And the dog.” He paused a micro-second to let that sink in. “Whereas if you stay here, you only have to change you. Something to think about.”
She held his gaze for what seemed like forever, only it wasn’t. Because forever would be too much to wish for, and there was too much to do.
