Book Review: Recipe for a Perfect Wife by Karma Brown

Publisher: Dutton (Penguin Group)
Release Date: January 21, 2020
Genre: Adult Fiction

In this captivating dual narrative novel, a modern-day woman finds inspiration in hidden notes left by her home’s previous owner, a quintessential 1950s housewife. As she discovers remarkable parallels between this woman’s life and her own, it causes her to question the foundation of her own relationship with her husband--and what it means to be a wife fighting for her place in a patriarchal society.

When Alice Hale leaves a career in publicity to become a writer and follows her husband to the New York suburbs, she is unaccustomed to filling her days alone in a big, empty house. But when she finds a vintage cookbook buried in a box in the old home's basement, she becomes captivated by the cookbook’s previous owner--1950s housewife Nellie Murdoch. As Alice cooks her way through the past, she realizes that within the cookbook’s pages Nellie left clues about her life--including a mysterious series of unsent letters penned to her mother.

Soon Alice learns that while baked Alaska and meatloaf five ways may seem harmless, Nellie's secrets may have been anything but. When Alice uncovers a more sinister--even dangerous--side to Nellie’s marriage, and has become increasingly dissatisfied with the mounting pressures in her own relationship, she begins to take control of her life and protect herself with a few secrets of her own.

My Review ðŸ’œ

When I first realized this was the author's debut novel I was in shock.  The writing is wonderful and the world building superb.  I haven't read much about the first world war but reading Three Little Things gave me quite a taste of the trials of war during that time period.

The blossoming love between Arno and Hattie is central, but there is so much more that surrounds their relationship, including a cast of well-developed characters that have been skillfully brought to life, and scenery so picturesque you are truly transported in time.

The banter between characters, especially between Hattie and Arno, is entertaining and quite charming, but what truly stole my heart were the letters written between the two, each including three little things, which were loosely based on the actual letters sent between the author's own maternal grandparents, making this tidbit all the sweeter.

Wonderfully written with such heart, Three Little Things was a sweet joy to read!

My Rating: ★★★★

My Review ♥️

I am a sucker for a good suspense, but what do you do when that suspense is way too predictable and has a leading couple that you find hard to root for?  You dig deep to figure out what you loved about the story, so that's exactly what I did, and it wasn't hard to find what made me enjoy this novel: the supporting characters and the love and support of family.

One character that captured my heart was Jordan, the heroine's sweet little six year old boy, who I absolutely fell in love with.  His bravery and childlike faith was so awe-inspiring that it truly stole the show, and was the perfect balance to the angst that his mother was facing.  I also loved how loving and supportive many of the other characters were.  Having such strong support in the midst of hardship is so important, and though it wasn't a glaring theme in this novel, you can feel the support that both Nicole and Jordan have.

I know that I'm supposed to love Nicole and Daniel, the two main characters, but they did not jive with me.  Maybe it's because I haven't read the first book in the series (though this book can definitely be read as a standalone), but something didn't click with me.  I know that Daniel is a cop, but his crazy stalker tendencies made me second guess his intentions.  Call me a cynic, but I just wasn't feeling it.  His relationship with Nicole is charming but lackluster for me, even though I could tell the author really wanted me to fall in love with them as a couple.  In saying that, I do have to admit that the ending is pretty cute.

Though incredibly predictable, the suspense was palpable, the writing is decent, and the love sweet, especially the love within the family.  I craved more plot twists but I did love the happy ending and I am really looking forward to the third book in the series.

My Rating: ★★★★
